Applied linguistics is the branch of linguistics that devotes itself to language related issues in society. Applied linguists analyze the structure and functions of language as a cognitive, social and cultural entity and use that knowledge to solve real-world problems. General goals include the pursuit of social justice, understanding how languages are learned and providing equal access to resources. Research areas include the study of multilingualism and language contact, adult literacy and second language acquisition, and English for special purposes such as writing and the law.

PSU offers a major and minor in Applied Linguistics, a TESL certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL Certificate) and an Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL).
