How do Assisted Living Regulations Impact Dementia Care?

The overall objective of this study is to examine states' assisted living (AL) regulations to understand if and how the health outcomes of AL residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD) are impacted by states’ regulatory decisions. Approximately one million individuals, an estimated 40-72% with cognitive impairment or a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (ADRD), reside in assisted living; yet, little is known about their experience or the quality of care offered.

The study, funded by the National Institute on Aging (R01 AG057746-01), is led by Dr. Kali Thomas at Brown University. The Institute on Aging is examining how states regulate AL as it relates to the care of residents with ADRD. In the next stages of this research, the team will assess how state regulations impact residents' health service use, including hospice care, as well as resident health outcomes.
