Safia is an incoming Assistant Professor at Portland State University (Fall 2020). She has a joint position in the Political Science Department and the Department of International and Global Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA. Her research interests include local politics, party systems, and elections in Africa. Her dissertation focuses on how opposition parties mobilize support in South Africa’s dominant party system. In addition to conducting fieldwork in South Africa, for her dissertation, She created original datasets on local elections in South Africa, and she used a unique methodology to gather survey data on voters in the country.
In the past, her research has been supported by the Eugene V. Cota Robles pre-doctoral fellowship, multiple Summer Research Fellowships, and funding for fieldwork from the International Institute. She has also received grants from the American Political Science Association (APSA).
