Professor, Graphic Design

Briar Levit’s research focuses on graphic design histories existing outside the canon, particularly those of women and other marginalized groups and the impact of various technologies and production methods on the practice, culture, and form of graphic design.

Levit directed a feature-length documentary titled Graphic Means, which explores the production processes of graphic design transitioning from manual to the desktop computer. She has edited a book of research essays about unknown women in design history, Baseline Shift, and she is co-director of a crowdsourced online archive called The People’s Graphic Design Archive.
