Undergraduate Advising

Department Advising

In order to request a dedicated Faculty Advisor in the English Department, please complete the Faculty Advisor Request Form. Once you submit this form, you will be matched with a personal advisor and notified via email.

Should I request a Faculty Advisor?

A Faculty Advisor can advise you on course selections in the English Department, support your progress through the English and Creative Writing majors and minors, and offer mentorship on your post-graduate plans. If you aren't sure whether you would benefit from a Faculty Advisor, please email the corresponding department advising email account (eng-advising@pdx.edu or cw-advising@pdx.edu), and we will be happy to discuss it with you further!

Should I contact the Undergraduate Studies Advisor?

For technical questions about your degree progress or understanding your DARS form, your pathway advisor should be your first point of contact. Pathway advisors will help you with all parts of your degree plan, including your major, and will be able to resolve most questions. If you have unanswered questions after discussing them with your pathway advisor, your advisor will reach out to the undergraduate studies advisor, providing your current DARS and details about the question/request. You may reach out to the undergraduate studies advisor to provide additional context (syllabi, etc.) or clarification:

Pathway Advising

The English major and the Creative Writing major are part of the Language, Culture, and Meaning (LCM) Pathway. Students in this pathway are automatically assigned to a specific LCM Advisor based on the last two digits of their PSU ID number.

For more general academic advising questions, and specific questions about transferring courses from other schools or majors, please email lcmadvising@pdx.edu. In order to make an appointment with your assigned LCM advisor, visit the Language, Culture, and Meaning Pathway website, and follow the virtual appointment booking links.

What can pathway advisors help with?

Academic advisors are valuable resources, who are here to help you successfully finish your degree! Consider making an advising appointment to get assistance with:

  • Creating an academic plan and tracking your progress towards the English majorCreative Writing major, and general degree requirements.
  • Exploring the major (for prospective or undecided students), and/or minors in EnglishWriting and Film Studies.
  • Selecting courses that fit your personal, educational, and professional goals and schedule.
  • Learning about PSU resources that can help you overcome academic challenges.
  • Preparing for internships, graduation, graduate school, or careers.
  • Understanding academic policies and completing academic petitions or other university forms.

How should I prepare for my pathway advising appointment?

Here are a few tips to get the best results from your advising appointment:

  • Prospective students and post-bac students: please bring unofficial copies of all transcripts!
  • Current students: please bring your English or Creative Writing Major Advising Worksheet if you have one already.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions! University policies and procedures can be very complex, so asking questions is great way to get a handle on them.
  • Write down your questions so you don't forget them during your appointment.
  • Come prepared to your advising session by reading the requirements for your major/minor in advance.
