Celebrate the archaeology and history of our region at the Archaeology Roadshow taking place at East Portland’s Gateway Discovery Park (10520 NE Halsey St.) on Saturday, May 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The 2025 Archaeology Roadshow will feature more than 35 pop-up exhibits and hands-on activities hosted by archaeologists and community members from universities, Tribes, governmental agencies, archaeology companies, museums and nonprofit cultural organizations.
This family friendly event introduces visitors of all ages to local heritage and the science and art of archaeology and history in a fun, engaging way, while instilling a sense of stewardship and respect for our diverse and complex history.
The Archaeology Roadshow began in 2012 on PSU’s campus — and over the past 12 years, has spread across Oregon, with celebrations now taking place in Portland, Bend, Harney County, and in The Dalles. With support from the East Portland Action Plan, PSU and other sponsors, the Roadshow is shifting from downtown to East Portland in spring 2025 – to emphasize that fascinating and important history happens all across the city and to meet people where they live and play.
This year’s theme is “The Archaeology of Art & Craft.” Our exhibits and hands-on activities will highlight ways the skills of the traditional artisan and master craftsman are reflected both in past records (archaeology, history, oral traditions) and in the living heritage art forms and traditions passed down through generations. Learn about ways art and craft are reflected in the many facets of the human experience, from music and dance, food preparation, and tool making, to clothing and personal belongings.
Here’s just a small sample of what visitors will experience:
- The Portland Chinatown Museum will feature Chinese calligraphy and painting practiced by Portland-based Chinese-American artists in Portland.
- Tribal artists from the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Arts Program will share knowledge and examples of Lower Columbia River art forms.
- The Rocky Butte Preservation Society will showcase the craft of stone masons and metal workers who created the viewing area on top of this ancient cinder cone.
- Make a stone tool or practice weaving, or throw a replica of an ancient spear.
A panel of experts in archaeology and geology will be on hand to identify the personal objects visitors bring. Stone, bone, plant and historical items are welcome. Experts will do their best to determine the object’s age, possible function and anything else they can. Limit – 3 objects. No financial appraisals.
To assist non-English speakers, we will have translators for Spanish, Russian and Cantonese.
Gateway Discovery Park is ADA accessible, with designated parking along the perimeter of the park. Most of the exhibits and activities will take place on the large, flat grassy area, wheelchair accessible from NE Wasco St and NE 106th Ave.
