The Anthropology Department faculty have a wide range of research interests in the subfields of socio-cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology and scholarship that cross-cuts the subfields.  Much of our work is applied. We focus on significant questions about today’s world, using method and theory drawn from a range of perspectives and relying largely on collaborative practice.

Faculty incorporate students in their projects whenever possible; and often with funding. Our scholarship is closely tied with our many partnerships in Portland, in the U.S. and globally. Key partners include the U.S. National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. National Park Service, U.S. National Forest Service, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Nepal, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, The World Conservation Union (IUCN), the Lemur Conservation Foundation, the Oregon Zoo, Portland Bureau of Emergency Management, and several various Indigenous Nations. In many instances our community partners are our project partners, through project design, development and completion.
