Portlanders are fortunate to share their urban landscape with a number of wildlife species. From Vaux's Swifts to elk, the City of Roses plays an essential role in the lifecycle and migration patterns of animals, large and small.

If you've walked through the Park Blocks in the fall and winter months, you've undoubtedly seen crows roosting en masse downtown. Observers are treated to a spectacular sight as an estimated 10,000 birds converge on the city each evening. Scientists believe they are attracted to the city for its ambient temperatures, accessibility to food, and safety from predators. In return, the yearly return of the crows is anticipated by many across campus, especially as we enter the Halloween season.
