Fields of Expertise:
history of the U.S. family; environmental history; Pacific Northwest history; American perceptions of Africa; comparative education.
He is the author of seven books, including:
What Trouble I Have Seen: A History of Violence against Wives (Harvard, 1996);
Oregon’s Promise: An Interpretive History (OSU, 2003);
Environmentalism (Pearson, 2011);
The American Family: From Obligation to Freedom (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).
His articles have appeared in: African Identities, Ethnohistory, the Journal of Interdisciplinary History, the Mennonite Quarterly Review, the Museum Studies Journal, and Journal of Family Violence, and Environmental History, among others.
He works with middle school teachers to integrate historical fiction and primary sources and to share letters with schools in Ghana.
