Academic Program Options

Our Pre-Entry Program is designed for students just starting to develop their English skills. 

The General English Program is meant for students who already possess beginner or intermediate English skills.

Students learn in a rigorous and dynamic environment to build strong written, reading comprehension, and oral communication skills that they can use in university and professional settings. Students who complete the advanced level have the English skills needed for success in the United States. The Academic English Program accepts students beginning through advanced levels.

Portland State University's Pathway Program for undergraduate students combines academic English courses, university classes, and many support services to prepare students for a smooth transition to university life and academic success as they pursue their degree at Portland State.

These specialized courses are designed to support graduate students in refining the communication skills necessary for success in American master's and doctoral programs. In these classes, students can work on improving their academic writing and presentation skills, develop strategies to effectively participate in American graduate-level classes, and receive support in adjusting to the culture and pressures of academia.
