As generative AI tools become increasingly more mainstream, there are a lot of questions revolving around the usage and outputs of these tools. In the digital accessibility world, there are two questions people are asking:

How do Generative AI Tools Change Accessibility Guidelines and Best Practices?

The answer is simple: They don’t, accessibility guidelines are focused on the content you create, whether or not you use generative AI, you still need to follow the most current guidelines and best practices.

Can Generative AI Tools Make Fully Accessible Content?

The answer is: No, any content created by an AI must be validated for accessibility. Some AI tools are better than others when it comes to content creation, but all content, whether created by a person or an AI, should be validated for accessibility.

If faculty or staff have any questions about generative AI and the accessibility of public-facing content, please contact the Office of Information Technology’s Digital Accessibility and Content Team by submitting a Digital Accessibility Support Request.
