Background
Dr. Sandberg is Associate Professor of Public Administration in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. Her primary teaching is in the Masters of Public Administration program, with an emphasis on nonprofit management. 

Dr. Sandberg earned her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2011, where her research focus was on nonprofit management and theory. Dr. Sandberg also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Arizona State University and a B.A. in history and anthropology from Ripon College.

Prior to joining Portland State University, Dr. Sandberg taught in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado, Denver and spent more than a dozen years practicing in both the nonprofit and public sectors. 

Research Focus & Interests
Dr. Sandberg’s research interests include nonprofit management and theory; public governance; critical social theory; and, power relations and agency. She has a strong background in qualitative research methods, with particular emphasis on interviewing, focus group facilitation, and document analysis.

Community Engagements/Service
Dr. Sandberg has provided professional training for a number of public agencies, including St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in Arizona and the University of Colorado. In addition, she is active in national committees for the American Society for Public Administration’s sections on Nonprofit Practice, Policy, and Partnerships and Public Administration Education.
