Project: Montgomery Plaza

Montgomery Plaza is one of the busiest pedestrian crossroads on campus—a place people pass through every day, but rarely stop. This fall, the Planning & Sustainability Office led several improvements to enhance the overall experience on the plaza.

To support evening activation and safety, overhead string lights were installed to illuminate the space after dusk. To encourage in-person interaction and on-campus studying, high-quality cedar tables and movable Adirondack chairs were added on-site. For the final step in this phase of placemaking, the Planning & Sustainability Office partnered with student artists Justice Ketcher, Mae Petit, and Sammy Won, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), and the nonprofit City Repair to turn the plaza into a place worth pausing in. True to the spirit of placemaking, the mural was painted by the community itself. Students, faculty, staff, and neighbors came together for a volunteer Paint Day in September 2026 to help bring the design to life, one flower at a time.

The project reflects PSU's commitment to activating our urban plazas and breezeways as places where people want to stay, show up, and belong.

About the Mural: INTERWOVEN

Interwoven’ is a 176x27 foot mural located in Portland State University’s Montgomery Street Plaza. Designed by PSU students Justice Ketcher, Mae Pettit, and Sammy Won, the mural weaves the plaza together into a space that encourages passersby to stay and linger.

Reflecting on our shared experience of being welcomed as transfer students to PSU, the blooming, multicolored flowers woven throughout the mural represent how a university like PSU can offer opportunities for students to bloom into unique individuals. Like flowers, individuals who hold the power to reflect back into the world all the beauty they carry within.

About the INTERWOVEN Artists

Montgomery Plaza mural artists

Sammy Won is a visual artist studying at Portland State University (PSU), double-majoring in Community, Urban Studies, and Planning, alongside Art & Design. Their work explores the whimsy and wonder found in urban life and our transit networks. For Sammy, ‘Interwoven’ represents how universities are places of colliding path-ways and stories. A place that can be a portal to other lives possible for yourself and your impact in the community, and where we can all bloom together.

Mr. Mae, aka Mae Pettit, is a senior in the BFA Art Practice program at PSU, a tattooer, musician and life-long multi-disciplinary artist. They expl-ore themes of liminal space and resistance, digging into the moments that transcend logic, the space between dreams and reality, finding ways to make the intangible tangible. ‘Interwoven’ is a place of connection; Conne-ction to ourselves, each other, and the environment around us. A safe space to exist.

Justice Ketcher is a visual art-ist studying at Portland State University (PSU), majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Advertising. In their perso-nal work, Justice explores th-emes of interpersonal conne-ction, identity, and commu-nity building. For Justice, ‘Int-erwoven’ explores the idea that “... as individuals, we all bring beauty into the spaces we inhabit. When we come together, our individuality becomes part of something greater, creating vibrant, me-aningful spaces that reflect the community that built it.”
