Teaching with Primary Sources: Tribal Histories through a Geographic Lens

June 24 - 26, 2025

Join the Center for Geography Education in Oregon (C-GEO) and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde (CTGR) for a three-day institute on teaching the new Social Science Standards Integrated with Tribal Histories through a geographic lens. This institute is for current K-12 Oregon educators and will be held at CTGR from June 24-26, 2025.

A focus of the institute will be researching tribal histories through primary source analysis, field work, and museum exhibit visits.  Participants will use their learning to create analysis tools and a lesson plan to use in their classroom.

Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge over the three-day institute:

  • Strategies to help students engage in learning, develop critical thinking skills and build content knowledge for teaching ethnic studies through a geographic lens.
  • Experience creating standards-based, content-informed model lessons that integrate primary sources.
  • Instruction and hands-on practice using the Library of Congress website, CTGR resources, and other primary source sites.

Coffee, light snacks, and lunch will be provided each of the three days.

Participants who successfully complete all three days and assigned activities for this institute will be eligible to apply to future C-GEO international institutes that include travel opportunities. Additionally, those successfully completing the institute will earn two graduate credits from PSU or equivalent PDUs. This is a local institute. Lodging will not be provided.

Application Deadline: Tuesday, February 28.
