Janice Lee has expertise in slow film, experimental creative writing, decolonial narrative studies and Korean shamanism. Lee has extensively studied the films and career of Bela Tarr, with a particular focus on the long take, slowness, and the apocalypse. She has also done extensive research on and taught a class about the Korean cultural-specific concept of Han. 

Her other research areas include experimental creative writing texts, decolonial language and narrative studies, Korean spirituality, mythology and shamanism, particularly in retellings of the Princess Bari myth.
