Professor, Art History

Anne McClanan researches medieval monsters and recently published Griffinology: The Griffin's Place in Myth, History and Art. She is currently working on a public-facing art history of dragons, concentrating on images from the Middle Ages through 19th century, from Europe through Asia.

McClanan teaches a range of art history subjects at Portland State including courses on medieval monsters as well as one on medieval medicine and magic. She has an ongoing university studies capstone, Medieval Portland, based on PSU students' original research on premodern material now in Portland (from medieval manuscripts to Native American petroglyphs).
