Associate Professor, Sociology

Aaron Roussell's first area of expertise is policing. He coauthored a book on a five-year ethnographic study of community policing in Los Angeles and has studied police, both generally and in Portland, for more than a decade. In this vein, Roussell also studies security, abolition, radical organizing and state violence.

Roussell's second area of expertise is drugs — use, policy, addiction and use by the state. He notes that while drug use amongst humans is fairly ubiquitous, more interesting is how the state uses drugs.

His third area of expertise is methodological. Roussell teaches quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods and concerns himself with the epistemologies behind science, particularly as these pertain to crime, state violence and drugs.
