Proposed Revisions to the Code of Student Conduct

30 Day Review Period: June 1-July 1, 2026

The Director of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution proposes to make changes to the Code of Student Conduct. Please review the proposed changes here and provide comments, questions, and feedback using the public comment form linked below.

Summary of Changes

  • Structural Updates & Modernization: The entire Code has been reordered to create a more logical, user-friendly flow.
    • Broader Scope (Purview): We have shifted our standard from geographic "Jurisdiction" to mission-driven "Purview." Instead of focusing strictly on where an incident happened (on vs. off campus), the Code now focuses on who it affects. This allows the University to better address digital misconduct, study abroad incidents, and off-campus behaviors that harm our educational community.
    • Status During Suspension: The Code now explicitly clarifies that students on suspension remain subject to the Code of Conduct, and any misconduct during that time will impact reenrollment.
  • Updates to Prohibited Conduct: Several definitions of misconduct have been expanded or updated to reflect the modern campus environment.
    • Academic Misconduct & AI: Updated to explicitly include the unauthorized use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and content.
    • Alcohol and Drugs: Expanded to include public intoxication that causes disruption, endangers self/others, or requires emergency medical intervention.
    • Digital Misconduct: Formally defines and prohibits unwanted or excessively persistent communication via digital devices, email, or cell phones.
    • Disruptive Behavior: Expanded to address persistent demands that place an undue burden on community members and impair their ability to work or study.
    • Weapons & Fraud: Clarified and tightened definitions surrounding prohibited weapons (specifically regarding knives) and expanded the scope of fraud to include general misrepresentation and false statements.
  • Procedural & Administrative Changes
    • Elimination of Conduct Fees: The University has eliminated baseline conduct fees. Restitution will no longer be an automatic fee, though it may still be applied as a targeted sanction when appropriate.
    • Streamlined Case Management: Notice letters will now include pre-scheduled meetings to expedite resolutions. Additionally, the Senior Conduct Officer has been granted broader discretion to dismiss cases that are not appropriate for formal conduct proceedings.
    • Preliminary Reviews & Appeals: New guidelines clarify the threshold assessment process and preliminary interviews before formal notices are sent. Additionally, the timeline for issuing appeal decisions has been extended from 30 to 60 days to ensure thorough reviews.
    • Consolidated Rules (New Section 7): A new section has been created to house various specialized policies in one central location, including policies on Student Standing, Amnesty, No-Contact Orders, and specific procedures for Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs).
