Admissions | Systems Science Ph.D.

The doctoral program emphasizes systems ideas and methods, more specifically systems thinking, system structure and dynamics, data modeling, computer simulation, networks, complex adaptive systems, and decision analysis. Subject areas include environmental systems, sustainability, energy, health policy, biomedicine, and other areas where systems ideas or methods make unique contributions to knowledge.

Admissions Requirements

  • Meet PSU's minimum requirements
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate and 3.25 for graduate
  • GRE scores
  • Recommended technical background, though few students fulfill all of these at the outset:
    • Calculus up to and including simple ODEs
    • Statistics, including introductory multivariate
    • Programming at introductory level
    • Linear algebra at introductory level

  • Copies of transcripts only from schools where a bachelor’s degree was awarded and/or graduate-level coursework was completed.
  • GRE scores
  • References: Submit contact information for at least three references. Portland State will contact your references and provide them with instructions for submitting recommendation forms.
  • Personal Statement: Your statement should explain your goals and interests for the program
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
