As our world undergoes tremendous change, from a warming planet to a polarized society, from radical new technologies to an embrace of diversity, from a desire for something simpler in our lives to information flowing at hurricane speed, architecture and the allied design and arts must change their way of working and thinking about space, place and systems.

Today is both a daunting and an incredibly exciting time to be an architect. These unprecedented challenges outlined above could be met with fear and doubling down on rote methods of design (that have proven successful since WWII) or we can rise up and challenge ourselves to develop new processes, deploy intelligent integration of technology, double down on the art of architecture and go all in on applying empathy and curiosity to chart an innovative path forward.

This talk by Jonathan Ward, Global Design Partner at NBBJ, will outline these changes and how they affect our profession as well as sharing a few NBBJ case studies which illustrate strategies, ways of thinking and outcomes that reflect a Design Change approach.

What is Friday@1?

On most Fridays at 1 p.m. during the academic term, PSU School of Architecture students and faculty gather to hear from professional designers and architects, academics, visiting artists, innovators, and students in the program. Friday@1 is a perfect way to wrap up each week of intense creativity in the studio and get inspired for the productive weekend ahead.

Free and Open to the public. All are welcome.
