Fridays@1 | Architecture Reporting: What It Is and Why It Matters

Friday October 11th 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

We live in a time of overlapping geopolitical (Palestine/Lebanon/Sudan), ecological (global warming), and social (gentrification/late capitalism/ fascism) crises.

Traditional modes at our disposal like architecture history and theory are useful for analyzing and problematizing our fraught global moment, but the world moves faster than academic journals can be printed, and ulterior means of communication and representation are necessary to keep pace. Might there be a third medium we can call upon?

This lecture by The Architect's Newspaper news editor Daniel Jonas Roche will delve into the knitty gritty nature of reporting on architecture. Roche will talk about facing defamation accusations by famous architects, long nights at bitter community board meetings between greedy real estate developers and marginalized communities, speaking with architects in war zones, nasty union drives, and more.

Who is Daniel Roche?

Daniel Jonas Roche is news editor for The Architect’s Newspaper. Previously, he was a freelance journalist and an adjunct faculty member at Kean University where he taught ethics courses and the history of socialist art and architecture. His writing has been featured in eflux, Brooklyn Rail, Faktur, PLAT, Pidgin, Architect Magazine, New York Review of Architecture, and Common Edge. He’s been a guest critic at Columbia GSAPP, Cooper Union, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, and other schools. Roche is co-authoring a book with Andrew Santa Lucia titled Antifascist Architecture (Park Books: 2025) with illustrations by Lane Rick. He holds degrees from the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture, and Design and Catholic University School of Architecture.

What is Friday@1?

On most Fridays at 1 p.m. during the academic term, PSU School of Architecture students and faculty gather to hear from professional designers and architects, academics, visiting artists, innovators, and students in the program. Friday@1 is a perfect way to wrap up each week of intense creativity in the studio and get inspired for the productive weekend ahead.

Free and Open to the public. All are welcome.
