What do you plan to do with your fluency in Russian?

I would like to use my Russian fluency to live in a Russian-speaking country for some time. I believe that time spent in a foreign country with different traditions, customs, and languages would aid in giving me a more well-rounded view of life overall. Furthermore, I have only spoken English my whole life, so I think it would do me good to live in a place where I cannot rely on something that I have taken for granted my whole life - my fluency in English.

What attracted you to the PSU Russian Flagship?

The small class size and intensity of the program attracted me. For my first two years of college-level Russian, I took the standard Russian classes, and I always found myself wishing the class would be more intensive, and that those in the class were more serious with learning Russian. When I took my first Flagship classes in the summer of 2017, I got exactly what I was looking for.

What’s the best aspect of being in the PSU Russian Flagship?

My favorite aspect of being a member of the PSU Russian Flagship is the community it creates. Whenever I walk around campus, I see at least one person from the program, and this makes me feel more at home. I also like that the teachers often feel as if they are my friends and not just my teachers.

Why is fluency in Russian important to you?

Fluency in Russian is important because it is a landmark to which I feel like I have been slowly inching towards for a couple of years now. I still have a way to go, but this is exactly what motivates me to continue moving forward. If I can achieve fluency in a foreign language, what else can I do?
