BI 326 - Comparative Vertebrate Embryology
This course is focused on exploring how a single cell can multiply and its subsequent daughter cells differentiate and cooperate to create an entire organism.  The development of each physiological system is covered in a variety of vertebrate classes, emphasizing both the commonalities in development as well as the differences that help explain the observed diversity of form and function.  Transgenerational epigenetic effects, and ecological effects on development are highlighted.  The lab uses serial sections of chickens, pigs and annual killifish to help students visualize the developing embryo.  Students spend a large portion of the lab exploring annual killifish development through independent research projects.

BI303 – Human Anatomy and Physiology
This course focuses on the form and function of the human body.  It is the last class in a year-long three part series (BI301, 302, 303).  This section focuses on the endocrine, respiratory, urinary, digestive, and reproductive systems.  Aging and human development are also covered.  In the lab, human cadavers are used to give students a practical appreciation for anatomy.

BI410/510 – Ichthyology
This course focuses on the amazing diversity of fishes found across the world.  Fish form and function, as well as diversity, evolution, and ecology are explored.  The lab is focused on fish anatomy, systematics, physiology, and behavior.

BI410/510 – Physiological Genomics
This course exposes students to modern techniques in biology that attempt to describe global patterns of gene expression and how those changes in gene expression result in changes in cellular and organismal physiology.  About half of the course is focused on understanding the principles, strengths, and limitations of modern techniques in biology such as DNA sequencing, microarrays, metabolite profiling, and proteomics.  The other half of the class is looking at how these techniques are applied to understanding cellular and organismal physiology, and exploring the strengths and pitfalls of these very powerful techniques.
