Undergraduate Scholarships in Mathematics + Statistics

The Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics encourages all of our math majors to apply for undergraduate scholarships.  Students should apply to scholarships via the PSU Scholarship Application.  
 
For undergraduate majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in our department, we offer four undergraduate scholarships. The deadline for application is May 1st.

Barbara McDougall Scholarship 

The Barbara McDougall Scholarship Award is in honor of one of our past Portland State University students. Mrs. McDougall is generously providing this scholarship to help support promising undergraduate mathematics and statistics students.

 

Eligibility: All declared undergraduate mathematics and data science majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Applicants will need to submit a statement in the online application "regarding current work in mathematics, service to the mathematical community, or promising future work in mathematics." 

Cliff and Deborah Burns Scholarship

The Cliff and Deborah Burns Scholarship was established to support undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics students. 

 

Eligibility: All declared undergraduate mathematics majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics.   Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need.  Past winners are not eligible. 

Daniel & Laura Brose Memorial Scholarship

The Daniel & Laura Brose Memorial Scholarship was created in December 2001 by Albert and Margaret Chen, Telamon Corporation, in recognition of the support given to them by the Daniel and Laura Brose family.

 

Eligibility: All declared undergraduate mathematics and data science majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics with a GPA in the major of 3.5 or above.  Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of Asian culture and experience. Special consideration will be given to students demonstrating financial need and students with diverse cultural experiences.

Applicants will need to submit a two page essay in the online application describing their understanding of the Asian culture or their own experiences.

Dave Fitzpatrick Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship

Dave Fitzpatrick Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship is established in honor of Dave Fitzpatrick, a graduate of Portland State University, earning a Masters in Mathematics. Dave Fitzpatrick was a member of the Society of Actuaries and earned his FSA and MAAA. He was the Vice-President and Group Actuary for The Standard, a Portland, Oregon insurance company. He was actively involved in the community and made a positive impact on others.

 

Eligibility: All declared undergraduate mathematics and data science majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics, who are in their junior year and have the cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Preference will be given to students intending to enter the field of actuarial science.

Applicants will need to submit a two page essay in the online application on their interest in entering a field that will allow them to apply their degree and the approach they will take to make a positive difference in the lives of others when they are established in their fields.

Robert W. Rempfer Scholarship Award

The Robert W. Rempfer Scholarship Award is in memory of our past Department Chair, Prof. Robert W. Rempfer, and is generously provided by the Rempfer Family to encourage promising undergraduate mathematics students. 

 

Eligibility: All declared undergraduate mathematics and data science majors who have taken at least one upper division course (300 or 400 level) in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics.  Past winners are not eligible.

Applicants will need to submit a statement in the online application "regarding current work in mathematics, service to the mathematical community, or promising future work in mathematics."  Limit the statement to one or two pages.
