Graduate Research Assistantship Announcement

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science

 Portland State University

Portland, OR

A graduate research assistantship (GRA) position is available for highly motivated students who are interested in research focused on materials science and engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.

Financial Coverage: This assistantship will cover the student’s tuition and fees, as well as provide a monthly stipend. This GRA position is available as early as the summer of 2020. The duration of this position will depend on the performance of the student and whether this student plans to finish his/her MS or PhD degree.

Research Focus: The student will work on a project that is focused on developing techniques to grow graphene at a temperature that is much lower than those of currently used in the traditional CVD processes. Especially, the direct growth of graphene on different substrates aimed at eliminate the graphene transfer processes will be investigated. The student will learn different materials characterization techniques including Raman spectroscopy, AFM/STM, TEM/EDX, and SEM/EDX, to characterize the synthesized samples. Some research experience in related areas is highly desirable but it is not a requirement.

 Eligibility

  • Graduate students who will be starting at PSU in Fall 2020
  • Current graduate students at PSU who are in good academic standing
  • Major in physics, mechanical and materials engineering or electrical engineering
  • Strong hands-on ability
  • Interest in operating instruments for materials fabrication and characterizations

Application and Contact: If you are interested in this position, please contact Prof. Jun Jiao via email (jiaoj@pdx.edu) with your research statement and your interest to finish either a MS or a PhD degree, a copy of your last four-years’ transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable), and a copy of your CV.
