COTA's Art & Social Practice Program

Artists in Residence

Art & Social Transformation

A number of Conflict Resolution faculty involve the arts in their conflict resolution practices.  In 2019, 2020, and 2021 CR was fortunate enough to host students from the COTA's Art and Social Practice Program.  These students engaged with the program's faculty, staff, students, and physical space to interrogate, amplify, and beautify the work of the unit.  Read on to learn more.

Artist in Residence

Where is here?

Lady Justice Love (PSU class of 2019) was CR's artist in residence during their senior year.  They constructed a installation that centered on a map of the program. One aspect of the map conveyed the program's physical space; its temporary quarters in the Market Center Building. Another aspect of the map represented the intellectual space  occupied by CR within the university.  The result was an engaging and stimulating set of reflections on what it means to transform ourselves and our society.  It all starts with a conversation.

Moving Day

In the winter term of 2020, Kris Blackmore, Rosalie McMillan, and Zel Starling grappled with the idea of "Moving Day" for Conflict Resolution.  They put together a humorous and creative "memo" about what moving to a new permanent suite of offices in Smith Memorial Student Union meant for our faculty, staff, and students. The resulting document was shared in conversation in the new suite and touched off a lively and energizing set of reflections on the meaning of place and belonging.

Conflict Resolution's 25th Anniversary

Cleophas Chambliss is a video expert who served as artist-in-residence during 2021.  She is a Conflict Resolution major and her residency focused on the program's anniversary oral history project. Cleophas drafted a short documentary film based on interviews with nine founding members of the program from the 1990s.  Though the project was cut short due to pressures from covid-19, Conflict Resolution eagerly awaits Cleophas's return to her studies and the possibility of completing the film in the near future.
