CCJ Chair Brian Renauer Talks Long-Term Gun Violence Prevention in Portland

Brian Renauer, Chair of Criminology & Criminal Justice, recently spoke with Oregon Public Broadcasting about the increase in shootings by Oregon police officers in 2022. 

“The long-term prevention approach is really investing in strong family, strong community, strong neighborhoods, strong schools and economic opportunities for all,” said Portland State University criminology professor Brian Renauer. He said defusing tensions between rival gangs requires intelligence collection and analysis, a role for which the police are potentially well suited, he said.

“It’s not just the police,” Renauer added. “It’s the police working with community, street, school outreach workers that know the victims and offenders and know where these rivalries and tensions are existing.”
