Crown Point Press

Founded by Kathan Brown in the basement of her Berkeley, CA home in 1962, Crown Point Press has printed and published fine art prints by prominent contemporary artists for over six decades. They began by publishing etching portfolios by Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud in 1965, and published several portfolios by American Minimalist artists, including Sol Lewitt, through a 6-year partnership with New York-based publisher Parasol Press. Since then, Crown Point Press has published work by over 100 artists, including John Baldessari, Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Ed Ruscha, and Anish Kapoor.

Between 1988 and 1991, Kapoor completed 23 etchings in collaboration with Crown Point Press. During his first visit, Kapoor was introduced to spit bite aquatint, an etching technique that lends itself to replicating tonal gradations similar to watercolor or ink-washes. This technique can be seen in three of the works on display at the JSMA at PSU: Untitled (II), Untitled (III), and Mother of Light.

Notably, Kapoor also participated in Crown Point’s woodblock program. From 1982 to 1990, Crown Point Press maintained woodblock programs in China and Japan, where artists worked with a woodblock master to create prints. In 1990, Kapoor traveled to Kyoto, Japan to work with ukiyo-e master Tadashi Toda, and the collaboration resulted in Untitled 10 and Untitled 11.

Paragon Press

Founded by Charles Booth-Clibborn in 1986, Paragon Press has been an active force in the UK fine arts scene for over four decades. Focusing primarily on British artists, Paragon Press published over 30 print portfolios in their first decade, and have to date, published over 200 projects, working with artists such as Sarah Morris, Damien Hirst, and Anish Kapoor.

Paragon Press published 144 prints on view in Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, over the course of 32 years of collaboration, and many were printed by Peter Kosowicz, director and master printer of Thumbprint Editions, who has had a long partnership with Paragon.

These works include the color-drenched gradients of Kapoor’s Flow series; the stark, monochrome compositions of History and its more colorful counterpart 12 Etchings. Kapoor’s work with Paragon Press has also spanned multiple printmaking techniques, including etching, the polymer gravure etchings of the Fold and iterative Shadow series, and the color pigment transfer prints of Wounds and Absent Objects.

The Lapis Press

Located in Culver City, CA, The Lapis Press was founded by Sam Francis in 1984, when they began publishing literary works and collaborating with contemporary artists. Since then, they have produced limited editions across a variety of printmaking mediums and have even editioned sculpture. Along with Anish Kapoor, The Lapis Press has worked with many well-known contemporary artists, including Marina Abramović, Ed Ruscha, and Betye Saar.

In 1994, Anish Kapoor participated in a collaborative series with The Lapis Press to honor the legacy of Sam Francis. Later, in 2001, The Lapis Press printmaker Jacob Samuel shipped a portable printing press to the United Kingdom to work on two projects with Anish Kapoor. One of the resulting editions is Untitled (Triptych), which is currently on view in Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins. Produced in only two days, the triptych, printed with deep red and striking black tones, brings to mind the recurrent themes of void, perspective, and form that appear in Kapoor’s work.
