PSU's College of Education Ranks Top in NW for Best Online Master's in Education Programs

The College of Education at Portland State University ranked highest among all schools in the Pacific Northwest for “Best Online Master’s in Education Programs,” per the new 2022 list of U.S. News & World Report. The ranking of online programs is based on student engagement, expert opinion, faculty credentials and training, services and technologies, and student excellence.

Students attend online from throughout Oregon, the U.S. and the world. Former student Renata Andrez earned her Master’s degree online in Early Childhood: Inclusive Education from PSU's College of Education while living in Europe, where she now teaches in an international school in Switzerland. “I really loved my courses and professors and the cohort was super interesting and very international. It was a beautiful experience to be exchanging ideas and the discussions were a core part,” she says. As a former international journalist, she researched the best programs in the U.S. to build the foundation of her new academic career.

Factors the report makers considered essential for a top-ranking school such as PSU are quality interaction between instructors and classmates, high degree completion rates, academic credentials of instructors, and strong online technology. Intangible elements count, too. These include a high regard for the school by academic officials in education and employers. Services for online students such as strong support structures for learning assistance, career guidance, and financial aid resources that match campus-based programs are evaluated along with student excellence.

“Best Online Programs are the only U.S. rankings that evaluate specific online programs rather than lumping all of a college’s online offerings into a single ranking,”’ said Mark White, the organization’s vice president, in a letter shared with the rankings today. “They are backed by the kind of in-depth data gathering and objective analysis that are typical of U.S. News rankings,” he wrote.

Overall distance-education at PSU scored high marks in graduate and undergraduate programs regionally and nationally, including 26th nationwide for Best Online Bachelor of Business Programs and 60th nationally for the Master’s in Education online programs.
