Student Spotlight: Kierra Wing

Student Kierra Wing
Kierra Wing at Basilica of la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain
Name: Kierra Wing
Major: I am a double major in Business Management and Leadership & Human Resource Management!
Year in School: I am in my third year at PSU, however, I intend on graduating this school year with the class of 2021!
Other ways you are involved at PSU: The Associated Students of Portland State (ASPSU) has been my community since last year when I joined as an intern! I've learned so much and made so many friends, relationships, and connections. I've even gone to Salem to lobby legislators to act on housing and food insecurity among college students. Now I am the chair of the Student Fee Committee which recommends and allocates the incidental fee to the president and board of trustees.
Why did you decide to become a student at PSU? I am an out of state student from sunny Las Vegas. I knew I wanted to go to school in Portland when I heard my cousin had an amazing experience at PSU getting his undergrad in electrical engineering. He interned for General Electric and got amazing recommendations from PSU faculty which landed him a job at an engineering firm where he now works in Manhattan. I toured the school and fell in love with the rainy campus and the upbeat people. I knew Portland State was going to take me exactly where I wanted to go in life and support me on my journey.
How did you decide on your major? Everyone has something they like doing that they are also good at. Many would say their "thing" is baking, gardening, writing, or creating art, however, my talent is much less tangible. I love talking to people and people love to talk to me. Yes, I'm the cashier you accidentally spilled your life story to. I'm the leasing agent who always laughing with someone in their office. I walk into a coffee shop and leave knowing everyone's names. I'm the great realtor, the therapist you can trust, the stranger you ask for directions. I've been an amazing leader and a great salesperson since I could talk. My mom would tell me, communication is not what you say, its how you say it. After I talked to a school of business advisors, they told me a double majoring in Business Management and Leadership and Human Resource Management would be great for a people person like me and the rest was history!
What has been your favorite class at PSU so far? Why this class? My favorite class at PSU so far has got to be American Sign Language. Not only did I learn a beautiful and expressive language, but I also had so much fun and learned so much about the Deaf community, non-verbal communication, and what access and inclusivity really means.
What has been your most rewarding experience at PSU so far? Why was this experience rewarding? My most rewarding experience so far has been being a panelist on the first-ever Student Fee Town Hall Forum at Portland State. It was so rewarding to be able to help educate others on student fees. Also, I felt so happy and satisfied spending time and effort planning an event for PSU students and receiving such positive feedback from students saying how helpful and informative they found the presentation to be.
What do you plan to do after you graduate from PSU? After receiving my bachelor's at PSU, I hope to go on to receive my Master in Real Estate Development at Portland States' School of Business. After completion, I hope to give back to the great people of Portland and become a developer for affordable housing in this beautiful city.
Anything else you want to say? I've had an amazing experience at PSU that I will always treasure. I've had such amazing, caring, and passionate professors that breathed life and interest into many subjects into me. Teachers with enthusiasm for the subject were so cool to be around. Also, a little kindness goes a long way. The times we are living in are tough and unprecedented. A lot of students have so much more going on than school so please try to be as patient and understanding as possible, students really really need and appreciate it. Setting your students up for success is key and it's something a lot of PSU teachers rock at. An easy to follow course schedule and itemized list of course deliverables every week made it so clear what was expected of you. Shoutout to all of my business professors; you made me so knowledgeable. Shoutout to my FRINQ and SOPHINQ professors; you made me more aware. To my French and ASL professors, thank you for never giving up on me. Also thank you to my advisors for believing in me and giving me the tools to succeed. All of you have a part in the leader and confident person I've become and I am forever grateful, thank you!
