Guidelines/Rules for Freight Delivery or LTL/Freight Handling

Definition of Freight

This list is not exhaustive but in general, Mail Services/Shipping & Receiving considers freight to be:

  • any large item (or items) delivered via LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier or courier such as, but not limited to: UPS Freight, Fedex Freight, Oak Harbor, Peninsula Trucking, Airport Drayage, etc.
  • any item (or items) shipped on a pallet, regardless of size
  • any single item delivered that weighs more than 150 lbs.
  • any single item with at least one dimension greater than 108", or 165" in length plus girth (length + 2*width + 2*height)
  • large orders of new furniture

Why Does Mail Services Require an Appointment?

Mail Services/Shipping & Receiving has limited space to handle and store freight deliveries for any period of time. For this reason we are requiring any department ordering freight shipments to be delivered to our loading dock at 630 SW Mill St. to be scheduled at least 24 hours (or 1 business day) in advance.

How to Schedule a Freight Delivery

Freight delivery appointments may be made by contacting Mail Services/Shipping Receiving through one, or all, of the following methods.

Freight requests must be accompanied by a work order so that Shipping & Receiving is able to promptly deliver your freight. Shipping & Receiving is not able to store freight for any period of time. Freight handling charges are $30.00/hour per employee.

Submit a work order through the Work Control Center's dashboard or call 503-725-2FIX (5-2349)

What Happens if Freight is Delivered without an Appointment?

Departments who do not schedule freight deliveries may be subject to significant delays or other penalties. Without an appointment Shipping & Receiving may refuse to accept the delivery until an appointment has been made (either by the department or by the carrier). Repeated failures to schedule freight deliveries may be assessed storage fees of or exceeding $150.00.
