Summer in Bologna, Italy with the Honors College

With the help of the Gilman Scholarship and the Honors College, Camille Moore spent a month exploring art, history and science in Bologna, Italy.

Studying abroad with PSU Honors is the best decision I made during my time here. The level of learning embedded into travel fosters conversation and reveals connections and theories that cannot be explored the same way at our home campus. Exploring the antiquity of a historic city alongside peers while discussing the impact of history on culture today elevates the study of the humanities to a new level I had never experienced before. The bonds and connections created run deep and continue back home.

When I heard about studying abroad in Bologna, I thought about how great it would be to fill my credits over the summer in Italy. Although this was my original push to engage, the program turned out to be so much more. The information sessions gave me some insight, but the program's depth would not be revealed until I went. After reviewing the initial program and costs, my heart sank. I did not think it would be possible for me until I heard about the Gilman Scholarship, an award for Pell Grant-eligible students for up to $5,000. I began to cling to a bit of hope that I could be one of those recipients. I immediately began my application as soon as I got home. Applying is a simple process, as Gilman guides you at every step with advisors and support.

I could not be more thankful for the opportunity Gilman gave me and for the Honors College’s resources.

I waited excitedly for the following weeks, and could not believe it when I saw the email I had received. I could not be more thankful for the opportunity Gilman gave me and for the Honors College’s resources. I spent a month exploring art, history, and science, and delving into the intersections and multidisciplinary explications as I examined nuanced concepts of the past with my peers. The program focused on preservation of culture through cinema and the history of medicine by exploring the secrets of the Renaissance. I attended a world-renowned film festival and had the chance to watch alongside brilliant cinephiles and filmmakers alike. While the days were spent between velvet-clad theatres, museums, and historical sites of medical practice, I enjoyed the most delicious meals of my life (that became part of the experience itself!). I had the privilege of going alongside two incredible professors, and the classes were among the most brilliant and thought-provoking courses I have ever been part of. I made unforgettable memories, traveled to cities I had never dreamed of, and created unbreakable friendships.

I have never felt more connected to PSU and its mission to foster creativity, ingenuity, and brilliance in every student...

I have never felt more connected to PSU and its mission to foster creativity, ingenuity, and brilliance in every student than when I finally experienced the majesty of the study abroad I had always dreamed of. Without Gilman, none of this could have been possible. I encourage all eligible students to apply and consider joining an Honors abroad program; it is an incredible resource and an amazing opportunity to engage in learning while gaining global experience.
