This page is designed to help inform those interested in the legislative issues affecting Portland State University and the seven public universities in Oregon. To that end, the page provides overviews of the issues that come through the Government Relations Department, information on basic research, links to several organizations that help to promote the public policy interests of colleges and universities, as well as links to related Portland State University websites.

Recent Successes:

  • Only 4.9% tuition increase.
  • Oregon Opportunity Grant Funded.

Constantly adapting to the changes in student needs and balancing the ability of government resources to provide assistance, the Government Relations team focuses on a few goals at a time. Regularly updated information will be provided on this page to help foster support for the issues at hand. Suggestions for future initiatives and volunteer opportunities please follow the instructions on the Student Involvement page.

Portland State University and the higher education community at-large maintain an interest in legislative and regulatory actions taken in Salem. From advocating for and maintaining the support of growing state investment in student aid, capital building projects, and research to representing and lending a voice for those who otherwise would not be able to share their concerns. Portland State University has a special perspective on a wide range of issues and a varied set of policies and proposals that affect us. Federal and State Relations staff work diligently to ensure that the higher education community’s voice is heard in the State Capitol and in Washington D.C.

The current issues we are advocating for:

Affordable Housing is an issue affecting more than just the student body at Portland State University. However, while students are trying to better themselves and endure the difficulties that come with getting a degree, housing is an added stressor that we aim to mitigate. Follow the link to resources and material on what Portland State University is doing to help the community.

Food Security is the other problem that students face on a regular basis. High food costs, availability, and access are the main barriers to a well-balanced diet. Food pantries and affordable meals are available on campus. Follow the link to find more resources and events that help provide for students and community members.
