Protest and Expression Team

The Protest and Expression Team (PEAT) is a standing committee of professionals in roles that require them to be subject-matter experts on university co-curricular free speech. The committee is focused on protecting freedom of expression and assembly while supporting a safe and healthy campus environment that honors our core educational and research missions.

Goals

  • To maintain ongoing relationships among PEAT members based on clear communication and trust in one another's roles and responsibilities.
  • To proactively discuss trends and upcoming protests and expression on college campuses.
  • To respond and consult on protest and expression needs as they arise.
  • To inform and educate the campus community about First Amendment rights and responsibilities as related to outside-the-classroom expression.

Core Activities

  • Holds standing monthly meetings.
  • Communicates or meets as needed when timely issues arise.
  • Develops protocols, resources, materials, and education to proactively support freedom of expression and assembly on campus.
  • Consult with one another and campus partners, as needed, to support events and outside-of-the-classroom expression when there are concerns with navigating policy, law, and best practices related to the First Amendment.
