J-1 Exchange Visitor Program
The PSU English Department values its role in hosting J-1 Visiting Scholars. Applicants approved as a visiting scholar will have access to department facilities, use of the shared Adjunct Office (FMH 318), access to the Millar library with borrowing and database privileges, and a contact person from among our full-time faculty.
The department asks that prospective applicants first review the visiting scholar guidelines posted by the Office of International Affairs: J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. We also ask that applicants familiarize themselves with our departmental and faculty areas of scholarship; for instance, in such areas as Publishing, Comic Studies, Technical Writing, and Ecocriticism.
Applicants who wish to visit as a J-1 Visiting Scholar in the following academic year should submit the following materials by January 1st (of the preceding year):
- Curriculum Vitae
- A statement of planned research, indicating why PSU may be of particular relevance to your project. Please also indicate the particular J-1 Category that best aligns with your research and project goals.
- A short list of potential faculty contacts in our department. Please note the specific publications and/or coursework by the faculty member that indicate where your research areas coincide.
In order to submit materials, please email eng@pdx.edu, and 'Cc the Department Manager (bogu2@pdx.edu).
Appointments are wholly contingent on funding. Each visiting scholar must have adequate financial support to qualify for the exchange program (currently a minimum of $1,775 per month). Financial support can be sourced from various places: home university funds, grants, awards, or personal funds. Unfortunately, PSU English does not currently have available funding to offer as financial support for visiting scholars.
Please allow 4-6 weeks after the January 1st deadline for a response to your application.
