by Currently June 6th 2025 Share Facebook Twitter Andrea Baeza, Geography graduate student, and Pronoy Rai, Geography faculty, have received a 2025 Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (Western region) Graduate Student Grant ($29,990) from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture for their project "H2A Program Guest Workers in California Grazing Operations."Jenara Bai, Sociology major, and Gwen Okamura and Angel Santos, Environmental Science majors, participated on a student panel for the presentation "From Justice to Joy: Co-Creating Supportive Spaces for Pacific Islanders in Higher Education," at the annual Asian Pacific American in Higher Education (APAHE) Conference in Oakland, CA on April 11, 2025.Tatjana Beck, Geography graduate student, presented a poster on her masters thesis, and was awarded the second best grad student poster, titled “Wildfire Impacts on Avian Community Assemblages in the Conifer Forests of the Western Cascades in Oregon, USA” at the Northwest Scientific Association 2025 Annual Meeting.Alex Bentley, Geography graduate student and Earth, Environment, and Society doctoral student, gave a talk on his masters thesis titled “Identifying the Drivers Behind the Decline and Dieback of Douglas-fir and True Fir Species in SW Oregon” at the Northwest Scientific Association 2025 Annual Meeting.Alida Cantor, Geography faculty, Thien-Kim Bu and Bethani Turley, Earth, Environment, and Society doctoral students, published "Pumped Storage Hydropower in the United States: Emerging Importance, Environmental and Social Impacts, and Critical Considerations" in WIREs Water.Willow Coughlan, Psychology undergraduate student and Neuro Club member, and Sydney Watson, Public Health undergraduate student and Neuro Club member, gave the keynote address at the Southwest Oregon Economic Forum on May 14, 2025.Spencer Haas, Spencer Immel, and Mallory Klucken, Russian flagship students, have all received Boren Scholarships, a prestigious national award that provides winners with a stipend of $25,000 to further their studies in critical languages, to support their capstone years abroad in Kazakhstan.Michael Krochta, Earth, Environment, and Society doctoral student, and Heejun Chang, Geography Faculty and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in CLAS, co-authored a paper titled "Effects of climate change on stream temperature and salmonid habitats in a Cascades river basin" published in Journal of Environmental Management.Jean Polneau, Russian flagship student, has received a CLS Scholarship to study in Ankara, Turkey this summer.
