In support of the first goal of Portland State’s five-year strategic plan — elevating student success — Currently features student success each term, acknowledging achievements such as publications, scholarships, grants, presentations and more. AWARDS, FELLOWSHIPS AND OTHER HONORS

  1. Xuan Dinh, psychology, was accepted, with hotel costs covered, to attend the American Educational Research Association Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop in April in Chicago.
  2. Obinna Ozioko, graduate student, won PSU’s Three Minute Thesis competition.

PRESENTATIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND EXHIBITIONS

  1. Dominique Chen, film student, presented a short film at 5th Avenue Cinema on December 8th titled Don't Trip
  2. Hannah Sean Ellefritz, graduate student, guest lectured on “Disability, Criminalization, and Social Control” in a class at Linfield University taught by Wynn Strange, graduate student, titled “SOC 201: Crime, Deviance, and Social Control.” Ellefritz discussed DisCrit theory, a social model of disability theory and critical race theory, and analyzed the processes by which Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students are disproportionately labeled with learning-related disabilities. 
  3. Megan McCoy, Isabelle Trujillo, and Esperanza Rodriquez, undergraduates in the University Honors College, and Rebecca Summer, University Honors College faculty, published the article “Support for Working Students: Understanding the Impacts of Employment on Students’ Lives” in the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice.
  4. Esperanza Rodriguez, Megan McCoy, and Isabelle Trujillo, undergraduates in the University Honors College, co-published the article, "Support for Working Students: Understanding the Impacts of Employment on Students' Lives."
  5. Brian Montes, political science student, PSU Student Ambassador, and former Associated Students of Portland State Chief of Staff and Legislative Director; was featured in a Nov. 7 AP News Article titled, “US Voters Fret About Democracy, Polarization Before Election.”
  6. Daniel Sheikh, graduate student, collaborated with a Cal State Fullerton student to study a rare meteorite from Mars.  
  7. Wynn Strange, graduate student, organized a pre-conference on Jan. 12 for Sociologists for Trans Justice at the January 2023 Sociologists for Women in Society Winter Meeting in New Orleans.

We want to celebrate your students! Email submit student success items to currently@pdx.edu and include the following information: 

    •    The student’s full name

    •    The student’s year and area of study (example: Jane Doe, a junior studying art history)

    •    If applicable, the student’s job, volunteer or research position. For example, if a student won an award for their work as an employee with the PSU Residence Hall Association, their position with residence life would be necessary for the write-up

    •    The full name of the award, honor, scholarship or fellowship the student received

    •    The date the award was given

    •    Any other relevant information about the award, such as length of fellowship, total scholarship amount, location of award ceremony

    •    A horizontal image, if you have one (600x400 pixels)

    •    Links to any other additional information you would like to be included in the write-up, such as news stories; web pages or documents for the awards/scholarships/fellowships; and accessible pages for publications (such as the Amazon listing for a student book available for purchase, or the article's journal web page for an academic publication)
