Who is eligible for honors?

To qualify for latin honors, students must:

  • Be an undergraduate student
  • Have at least 72 credits completed at PSU, 60 of which must be taken for differentiated grades (not Pass/No Pass).
  • Have at least a 3.67 PSU cumulative GPA or higher upon graduation (only PSU credits will be used in this calculation)

PLEASE NOTE: Honors recoginition in the university-wide commencement ceremony is determined differently. More information is provided below.

I've met the eligibility, what type of honors do I receive?

Honors are awarded as follows:

  • 3.90 to 4.00 - Summa cum laude
  • 3.80 to 3.89 - Magna cum laude
  • 3.67 to 3.79 - Cum laude

I am eligible for honors, what do I receive?

Congratulations! A student who has been awarded honors will have honors recognition printed on their diploma and on their final transcripts according to their PSU cumulative GPA standing upon their graduation term.

Students participating in the university-wide ceremony will have their name printed in the commencement program with their latin honor and will be awarded a latin honor cord to wear during the ceremony. PLEASE NOTE: other eligibility criteria is used to determine latin honors for commencement ceremony purposes. See section below for more information.

What is the eligibility for honors recoginition at the university-wide ceremonies?

Although the final PSU cumulative GPA upon your graduation term is used to determine your honors that will be printed on your diploma and transcript, eligibility for honors recognition at the commencement ceremony is a bit different.

To qualify for honors recoginition at the university-wide ceremony, students must:

  • Meet the latin honors criteria (found at the top of this page) at the end of winter term 2017. Your PSU cumulative GPA at the end of winter term 2017 and credit standing is used to calculate latin honors for the Spring commencement ceremony.
  • Apply to graduate and have provided consent to your name being printed in commencement program. The final deadline to guarantee your name will be included in the printed commencement program is April 30, 2017.
  • Indicated they will be participating in the university-wide commencement ceremony at the Moda Center on Sunday, June 18th, 2017. 

Honor cords are given to students who are participating in the university-wide commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at the Moda Center ONLY. Honor cords are awarded as follows:

  • Summa cum laude - Gold Cord
  • Magna cum laude - Silver Cord
  • Cum laude - Green Cord

Why does Portland State use my winter term GPA for honor cord purposes?

We are only able to distribute honor cords based on your winter GPA since that is the latest official GPA available at the time of cord distribution in May 2017. Your final PSU GPA will determine the honor level printed on your diploma and transcripts. 

How do I know if I will receive an honor cord and where can I pick up my honor cord?

The PSU Commencement Office will be getting the list of students graduating with honors from the Degree Requirements office in May. Once we receive it, we will be notifying those graduates by email to their email. Emails have been sent to eligible students on 5/23, please check your inbox including your spam folder before contacting our office with inquires.

Honor cords may be picked up at the Graduation Fair on May 24 and 25 in SMSU 329 Please bring your student ID. 

Missed Grad Fair? Stop by the Latin Honors table in the graduate line-up area upon arrival to your ceremony at the Moda Center. Please bring your student ID. Honor cords cannot be mailed and are not available for pick-up before the ceremony.
