Portland State graduated more than 6,000 students on Sunday in two ceremonies at the Moda Center. Graduates came from 43 states and 47 nations, and ranged in age from 15 to 80 years old.
Twenty-nine percent of all degrees – including 31 percent of bachelor’s degrees -- went to students of underrepresented minorities – a number consistent with PSU’s status as the most diverse university in Oregon.
It was the final graduation ceremony for Wim Wiewel, who is leaving PSU in August after serving nine years as the university’s president. “It has been a privilege to lead Portland State,” he said. “I cannot think of a better way to end my tenure as president than joining faculty, families and friends in honoring your achievements today.”
Wiewel’s daughter was among the graduates, and he gave a shout-out to all the other dads in the crowd. “I know how special it is to celebrate Father’s Day today,” he said.
