Program Benefits

Students who participate in the Resilience Internship Program are able to:

  • Build and enrich their social capital through connections with career mentors/intern supervisors
  • Secure steady income ($3,000/term) while contributing to a project that compliments students’ academic interests and reduces financial barriers to persistence
  • Reinforce a positive identity between their career interests and personal goals through monthly cohort programming workshops
  • Practice and expand professional skills beneficial to their chosen career field through direct climate/disaster resilience engagement in local government or non-profit organizations in the Portland metropolitan area

Program Eligibility

LSAMP eligible applicants are currently enrolled at PSU or PCC and plan to be enrolled for the duration of the internship (through Spring 2024). Students must also self-identify as a member of a historically excluded group in STEM as defined by the National Science Foundation which includes African American/Black, Hispanic/Latine, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students majoring in STEM disciplines. PCC students in the LSAMP cohort are also eligible to apply. Questions? Contact Jen Lindwall at lindwall@pdx.edu.

Students spend 10-12 hours per week working with their host organization over a full academic year. Interns are paid a scholarship of $3000/term. Recruitment of mentors at partner organizations is focused on promoting student mentorship at the core of the internship experience. Interns attend at least eight professional development workshops over the course of the year and meet regularly with an onsite graduate mentor and/or LSAMP staff throughout the program experience. At the end of the year, interns share their project progress, contributions, and learning with the broader PSU community in a formal end-of-year celebration.
