Housing Policy & Planning

Center for Urban Studies researchers study housing markets, housing development, and housing policy and planning from a local to national scale, and in a global context. This research considers the connection of housing and neighborhoods in changing cities, and how policymakers and planners can promote access and equity. It examines how public, private, and nonprofit actors each influence housing and urban development, as well as how communities organize to advocate for just and sustainable neighborhoods with safe, stable, and affordable homes. Scholars from Urban Studies & Planning are also leaders in PSU’s Homelessness Research Action Collaborative, producing community-engaged research on issues of houselessness and working with unhoused folks to increase knowledge about their experiences.

CUS researchers in this area include:

  • Dr. Lisa K. Bates, who studies gentrification and displacement, fair housing policy, ‘naturally occurring affordable housing,’ and eviction.  examines housing with particular focus on eviction and eviction prevention.
  •  Dr. Marisa Zapata evaluates local, regional, and state policies and programs as director of the Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative.
  • Dr. Matthew Gebhardt looks at several issues including housing redevelopment policies across different cities.
