Gentrification + Displacement

Too often, as Portland’s neighborhoods change, long-time residents are being pushed out by rising housing costs. Gentrification means the displacement of poor and working class people of color and renters, and the disruption of community life. These changes are triggered by public and private investments in real estate markets that are driven by housing for profit, not for people.

CUS research on gentrification includes assessments of the scope and scale of neighborhood change, tools for anticipating housing loss, and evaluating policies to mitigate displacement. The work includes partnering with community-based organizations and advising local and regional governments.
