MISSION STATEMENT

The Center for Urban Studies (CUS) at Portland State University facilitates, supports and promotes multidisciplinary research and community service by faculty and students at the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning (TSUSP) on urban and regional systems, policies and issues, such as planning and growth management, community development, sustainability, energy, transportation, economic development, housing, equity and justice. CUS provides the infrastructure for our faculty and students to engage with communities, governments, organizations and institutions, and to highlight collaborative research and practice.

HISTORY

The Center for Urban Studies was established in 1966 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education as a multidisciplinary research institute located within the College of Urban and Public Affairs. Since its inception, the Center’s emphasized research in urban policies and urban and regional planning, and was home to the Center for Transportation Studies and Community Environmental Services.

Dr. Jenny H. Liu became the Director of the Center for Urban Studies in 2020. She was immediately preceded by Dr. Matthew Gebhardt, who currently serves as Director of Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies. Prior to Dr. Gebhardt, the position was held by Dr. Lisa Bates, who has received many awards for her work in housing and equity. Prior to 2014, Dr. James Strathman served as the CUS Director for more than 15 years until his retirement in 2014.
