Welcome

REU Site Program on Applications of Microscopy and Microanalysis

Applications are now open for the Summer 2022 REU Program. The eight-week program is scheduled to take place from June 20 to August 12, 2022 and the deadline for applying is May 31, 2022. Please click here for more information on how to apply.

This REU Site program focuses on the applications of microscopy and microanalysis in multidisciplinary research and provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in cutting-edge research projects. The participant recruitment is emphasized on underrepresented minorities, women, veterans of the US armed forces, students with disabilities, and nontraditional students.

This summer program allows students to engage in research work in a multidisciplinary environment while training them in microscopy and microanalysis techniques for materials characterization. The goal of the program is to provide research opportunities to students who do not have access to advanced research facilities at their home institutions and teach them research skills and enhance their confidence to pursue advanced degrees and research careers in science and engineering fields.

For the REU summer program, participants receive a $4,000 stipend and engage in eight weeks of full-time research, which includes a week-long training course at the beginning of the program and practical seminars throughout the program. There are weekly group meetings for participants to connect with one another and share their research, as well as a field trip to visit several local high-tech companies such as Thermo Fisher Company, Intel, and Nike In-house Manufacturing. Participants will give a formal research project presentation at the end of the summer program during the REU Symposium and write a research paper for possible publication.
