The Vernier Science Center (formerly known as Science Building 1) is undergoing a significant remodel and expansion to create a cutting-edge STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning and research facility at Portland State University. The exciting project is being named after Christine and David Vernier, esteemed supporters of Portland State and founders of Vernier Software and Technology.
Project Update:
Thanks to funding secured during the 2023 legislative session, the project has received full financial support. The project team has conducted a thorough evaluation and has resumed work on previously paused aspects, including the build-out of the 5th floor.
Construction Update:
Demolition work has been completed, and the project is now progressing with Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing installations, as well as reinforcing the existing shear walls of the building. The procurement of significant equipment, such as a generator, is being carefully coordinated to ensure the project remains within budget and adheres to the established timeline. Anticipated substantial completion is set for the summer of 2024.
Sustainability Update:
The Vernier Science Center Project is currently on track to achieve LEED Gold certification, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
The Vernier Science Center's remodel and expansion will provide an inspiring and state-of-the-art environment for STEM education and research at Portland State University. With ongoing construction progress, careful attention to sustainability, and the generous support of Christine and David Vernier, this project promises to be a transformative addition to the campus community.
