The Rise of Javier Milei and Antipolitics in Argentina - A Talk by Dr. Leopoldo RodriguezWhen: Friday, October 13th at 12:30 PM Where: Parson's Gallery (URBN 212)Coffee and cookies will be provided! ABOUT THE TALKJoin us to hear Prof. Leopoldo Rodríguez explain the political and economic context that has given rise to Javier Milei as the top contender for the country's Presidency. Just like the US did with Trump, and Brazil with Bolsonaro, Argentina is having its own radical right wing moment. Often compared to Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro for his incendiary style and radical right wing proposals, Milei triumphed in 17 out of 24 provinces with nearly 30% of the votes in a three way split. This talk will explain the contradictions of his voter base by analyzing the tone and content of his campaign within the larger context of the antipolitics movement pursued by segments of the Argentine Judiciary and corporate media since 2015. ABOUT THE SPEAKERDr. Leopoldo Rodriguez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and Global Affairs at PSU. Dr. Rodriguez grew up in two major cities in Latin America: Buenos Aires and Mexico City. The social contrasts and economic problems he witnessed growing up led him to seek solutions in the field of economics. He holds a Master's of Public Affairs and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests are broad and interdisciplinary including international financial crises, international migration and rural development.
