Please describe the UPP-funded or affiliated project(s) you are currently working on or have worked on in the past?

I am working with the US Army Corps of Engineers' HEC-HMS hydrologic model to develop adjustments and calibrations that improve its ability to model the effects of wildfires. This collaborative project is funded by the Army Corps and carried out in partnership with the USGS, with contributions from Marc Stewart, Will Long, and Brandon Overstreet.

Who are your USGS supervisor and PSU advisor?

Kelly Gleason

What are your primary responsibilities/roles of your research position?

My current responsibilities include field work to maintain our sites in the Breitenbush River headwaters and learning modeling in HEC-HMS.

What skills have you gained from your research experience?

I am just getting started in my first semester of my Masters, but I have already learned a lot. Moving from ecology-focused research to ecohydrology has involved learning about hydrologic systems, especially systems related to snow. It has been very fascinating and along the way I have learned about setting small goals in order to achieve the bigger goals such as writing a thesis, publishing my research, and presenting it.

What aspects of your project have you enjoyed the most?

I have a very innate desire to learn and in my coursework and research, I see so much room for learning and growth over the next two years. I have already enjoyed expanding my horizons to new knowledge and I'm excited to continue doing so.

What have you learned or hope to learn from this experience?

I hope to become more familiar with hydrologic modeling, which I'm sure comes with time, and I hope to learn more about the community of people interested in water science around Portland and beyond.

What are your academic and/or career aspirations after graduation?

I hope to continue using research to promote informed management strategies for land and natural resource management agencies.

What's your favorite way to use or interact with water?

Sliding on frozen water on skis!
