Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship

The Institute for Asian Studies Student Scholarship is a competitive award of up to $1000 for one or two qualified, full-time, degree seeking, PSU students, who are pursuing an academic program at Portland State, or abroad, with a focus on Asia and/or Asian language studies.

Award amount:

Up to $1,000 for one to two qualified PSU students will be awarded for the 2023-24 academic year.  Award amount will depend on the length of the study program, location, budget, and other support.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

Eligible candidates must: 

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
  2. Be  full-time enrolled or accepted for full-time enrollment at Portland State University, as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student;
  3. Be pursuing an academic program at PSU, or abroad, with a focus on Asia and/or Asian language studies. 

 

Scholarship  Requirements:

Students who are awarded the scholarship are required to:

  1. Complete a Follow-On Service Project within six months of returning from a study abroad program or within one year after receiving the scholarship.
  2. Submit a 2-page project summary at the completion of the Service Project.

Scholarship recipients may be asked to serve on the Asian Studies scholarship selection committee in the following year.

 

Required Application Materials:

Each application must include the following documents.  

  • IAS Scholarship Application Form 
    • The Application Form is a formatted Google Form. You will need to be signed into you @pdx.edu account before submitting. Please have all materials ready before submitting. You will not be able to resubmit or add additional information after the form has been submitted. If you experience any technical issues, please let us know at asianstudies@pdx.edu.
  • A personal statement / statement of purpose / essay (maximum 500 words)
    • Describing your objectives for pursuing Asia-related studies, Asian language studies, and/or a study abroad program in Asia.
    • In other words, how does Asian Studies relate, complement or enhance your career and personal goals?
  • A Follow-On Service Project Proposal
    In proposal format, explain how you will give back by either inspiring others to pursue an education in Asian Studies or promoting an understanding of Asia and Asian culture amongst fellow students and/or the larger community. 
    • Projects can be conducted on campus or in the community.
    • Projects and must be completed within six months of returning to the U.S.A. (after studying abroad) or within a year of accepting of this scholarship award (for non-study abroad applicants). 
    • The proposal should include a brief outline of the project to promote Asian studies and international education, addressing:
      • Type of activity
      • Target audience
      • How will this project impact your target audience, the University or the community?
      • Will the project include collaborators with other campus departments, student organizations, and/or community organizations to help you carry out your project? If so, have any of these groups already been contacted?
  • Confirmation of your enrollment in, or acceptance to, your proposed course of study or study abroad program. This can include a print-out of your course registration for the up-coming term or letter of program acceptance. If you haven’t been accepted yet to a study abroad program, please submit a brochure or print-out of the program description.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended  
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (at least one letter must be from a professor or academic advisor; letters of recommendation can be sent directly to asianstudies@pdx.edu)

Application Process

SUBMIT all required materials with the IAS Scholarship Application Form.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all materials including letters of recommendation, are received by the Institute for Asian Studies by the application deadline.  Only complete applications from students who meet the scholarship eligibility criteria will be accepted.

Scholarship awards are determined by the PSU Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship Committee or by an appropriate unit designed by the Office of International Affairs.

Scholarships shall be given on a competitive basis among qualified applicants enrolled and with good academic standing at PSU and in accordance with PSU’s general scholarship selection guidelines and processes.  

By signing the PSU Asian Studies Scholarship Application Form, applicants certify

  • that they have read and understand the Terms of this Scholarship;
  • that their application documents are complete and true;
  • that they authorize Portland State University to furnish copies of their academic record, their Asian Studies Scholarship application documents and letters of recommendation to the PSU Asian Studies Scholarship Selection Committee for review and consideration.
  • And that if selected for a scholarship the applicants authorize release of information for publicity purposes.

Awards Scholarship funds will be applied to student's PSU Banner account during the term of the awarded study program.
