Message from the Director, Birol Yesilada, PhD

I would like to welcome you to the Center for Turkish Studies at Portland State University. We are located in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government and provide academic coordination for the Contemporary Turkish Studies Program at PSU and serve as the main venue for institutional collaboration with universities in Turkey.

Our Turkish Center is an interdisciplinary institution that brings together faculty and students from across campus and other institutions of higher education throughout the United States, Turkey, and Cyprus. Thanks to renewed agreements with institutions of higher learning in Turkey, ongoing faculty and student exchange and collaborations are supported by Portland State University's rich course offerings and research activities that promote the internationally recognized achievement of academic research and educational goals in economics, history, politics, and contemporary Turkish language and literature. In these venues, the Center for Turkish Studies enriches Portland State University's academic offerings by coordinating faculty and student linkages to Turkish universities, and contributes to Portland State University's internationalization initiative.

The Center for Turkish Studies is one of the few places in the world where multidisciplinary expertise in business, culture, economics, foreign affairs, history, language, national security, politics, religion, sociology, and sustainable development brings about a comprehensive study of the Turkic world. By promoting interdisciplinary scholarly research, educating and training students as new leaders of the future with critical knowledge, and advancing public awareness about modern Turkey and the Turkic world, the Center for Turkish Studies serves an important role as a unique think tank, and places Portland State University on the cutting edge of higher education with significant policy application and public service.
