The Department of English plays a vital role at the University and for the larger Portland community. Additionally, the Friends of English sponsors public lectures and readings, and the English Department Community Fund supports faculty outreach to persons with disabilities, the incarcerated, and the homeless.

Student Awards

The Department of English annually grants awards and scholarships to students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The awards process culminates each spring in the Student Awards Ceremony, where we come together as a department to celebrate our students and to thank our donors and sponsors, and each fall at the Nina Mae Kellogg Awards and Lecture.

You can make a donation to the Student Awards Fund online through the Portland State University Foundation. All gifts are tax-deductible and truly make a difference, no matter the amount. In addition, many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. MFA Creative Writing

Our two-year degree emphasizes workshops and close mentorship by core faculty, while also offering the flexibility of a part-time option and the rich course offerings of Oregon's largest university. MFA students also work with acclaimed visiting and resident writers through our partnership with Tin House, including our 2016-17 writers Christine Schutt and Jorie Graham.

Ooligan Press

Ooligan Press is a not-for-profit press run by students in our graduate program in Book Publishing. Ooligan press depends on both the sales of its books and the generosity of donors to help with the day-to-day costs of running a publishing house. The students in the graduate program have worked tirelessly to build a catalog of quality books in a range of genres, to move the catalog into the digital realm by publishing ebooks, and to hold a yearly publishing conference. They have big goals, not only for their education and careers, but for the future of the graduate program and Ooligan Press.

The financial realities of running a publishing house don’t always align with students’ visions for Ooligan Press. This is where help from donors like you is needed. Your contributions make it possible to turn students’ ideas into realities. Giving to the Ooligan Press General Fund helps cover printing costs, general operations, promoting the press, and educational opportunities for students.
